What is oral surgery?
Oral surgery broadly encompasses the diagnosis and treatment of health conditions, defects or injuries affecting both the soft and hard tissues of the mouth. Only experienced dental specialists perform oral surgery, and complex cases or patients with unique medical history require a high level of sensitivity and expertise in order to provide a comfortable experience and an ideal clinical outcome.
Some examples of oral surgery treatments include:
-
Wisdom tooth removal to treat or prevent pain and infection
-
Tooth extractions to remove decayed or damaged teeth
-
Dental bone grafts to increase the volume and density of the jawbone
-
Dental implants to replace missing teeth
-
Gum grafts to treat thinning or receding gums
Wisdom Tooth Removal
You might need wisdom teeth removal if your wisdom teeth cause pain, grow crooked or result in other oral health issues. Sometimes dentists recommend removing wisdom teeth preventively before issues can develop. This common oral surgery procedure takes about an hour to complete. Full recovery takes about two weeks.
Tooth Extractions
When severe tooth decay occurs, it may be necessary to remove the tooth completely. Tooth Extractions are important to remove bacteria and improve oral health. A tooth extraction is a dental procedure during which your tooth is completely removed from its socket. Sometimes, people refer to this as “pulling" a tooth.
Bone Grafting
When bone loss occurs in the jaw, bone grafting may be necessary to proceed with certain restorative procedures, such as receiving dental implants or dentures. A dental bone graft increases the volume and density of the jawbone, strengthening it to hold and support dental work.
Dental Implants
Dental Implants are a popular choice for tooth replacement. Dental implant surgery involves implanting a titanium post to replace the missing tooth, to which a crown or bridge is then attached.
Gum Graft
Gum graft surgery is a dental procedure for treating thinning gums or gum recession. Gum grafting covers exposed teeth roots and adds volume to the gum line, improving overall oral health. Recovery usually takes one week to two weeks, but it may take longer.
