What is a root canal?
A root canal cleans, disinfects and seals a severely decayed or infected tooth. There is a soft tissue called pulp inside of your tooth consisting of blood vessels, connective tissues, and nerves. When decay erodes through the enamel and dentin of the teeth and into the pulp, infection sets in and typically causes severe pain.
During a root canal, the infected pulp inside the tooth is removed and cleaned so you no longer feel pain. A filling material is then placed inside of the tooth to seal the opening and prevent further infection. When necessary, root canals relieve pain, restore your ability to chew, preserve and restore the infected tooth, and even protect other teeth.
Why is a root canal helpful?
A root canal treatment is the best way to relieve pain and prevent tooth loss in cases of severe tooth decay. The procedure removes any inflamed or infected pulp from the tooth, prevents further infection, and protects the tooth from further damage.
Root canal treatment is highly successful in preserving natural teeth at a rate of 95% or more. When needed, it can restore your smile to its normal look and feel and prevent the need for a dental implant.
Rather than causing you more pain, a root canal will help you feel better. This treatment is designed to:
-
Remove the painful, diseased pulp inside your tooth
-
Seal the tooth to help prevent additional problems in the future
-
Allow you to bite and chew comfortably on your repaired tooth
-
Keep your tooth instead of losing it to extraction
Is a root canal painful?
No. While root canals tend to have a bad reputation among dental procedures, the dental professionals at The Center for Adult Dentistry in Temecula and La Quinta prioritize patient comfort and safety during every procedure. Sedation dentistry and anesthesia are skillfully administered to provide a relaxing and pain-free experience.
"A 2023 study published in Clinical Oral Investigations found that the success rate of a tooth surviving after a root canal ranged from 97% after 10 years to 68% after 37 years. The American Dental Association says that with proper care, your restored tooth can last a lifetime."
